The History of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month

The theme is ‘See Yourself in Cyber’
It is officially National Cybersecurity Awareness Month! This year, we want to focus on the most important part of cybersecurity: The People. It’s easy to get caught up on the different types of hardware and software that can protect your business, but it would not all be possible without the fantastic cybersecurity professionals. This year’s theme is ‘See Yourself in Cyber’ and we plan to help you do just that.
The History of Cybersecurity Awareness Month
Cybersecurity Awareness Month is celebrating its 18th year and is celebrated throughout the month of October. It is a collaboration between private businesses and the federal government to raise awareness about the importance of protecting yourself online and empowering businesses to take steps to become more cyber-safe.
In 2004, President George W. Bush and Congress declared that October would be Cybersecurity Awareness month. This decision was made to help individuals and businesses learn more about protecting themselves against online threats, as they had started to become more common. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA) lead a collaborative effort between the government and the cybersecurity industry to raise cybersecurity awareness both in the US and around the globe. Since 2009, National Cybersecurity Awareness Month has included an overall theme. This year’s theme is “see yourself in cyber”.

What is “See Yourself in Cyber”
CISA stated that ‘see yourself in cyber’ “demonstrates that while cybersecurity may seem like a complex subject, ultimately, it’s really all about people . This October will focus on the “people” part of cybersecurity, providing information and resources to help educate CISA partners and the public, and ensure all individuals and organizations make smart decisions whether on the job, at home or at school – now and in the future. We encourage each of you to engage in this year’s efforts by creating your own cyber awareness campaigns and sharing this messaging with your peers.”
